Topical Sedation
- topical anesthetics are often applied with a cotton swab to numb the affected area and the peripheral nerves, and reduce the sensation of pain. This type of sedation is very commonly used for tooth restoration, fillings, or root canals. Topical anesthetics are also used to prepare an affected area prior to getting a local anesthesia to further reduce any type of pain.
Local Anesthesia
- This type of sedation is most commonly used for procedures such as cavity fillings, root canals, and extractions. Our team will inject the anesthetic using a small syringe that will numb the affected area. This type of sedation will prevent pain in a specific area of your mouth during treatment by blocking the nerves that sense or transmit pain. You will be conscious and able to communicate with your dentist during this procedure. Most local anesthetics take effect quickly (within 10 minutes) and can last around 30 to 60 minutes.
Nitrous Oxide
- Also known as laughing gas, nitrous oxide is an odorless gas that produces a relaxed feeling throughout your body. Our team administers this gas using a small mask worn over your nose, which you’ll breathe before and during your treatment. Nitrous oxide wears off extremely quickly, often within just a few minutes after the gas stops flowing.
- The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Guidelines considers nitrous oxide inhalation a safe, effective, and “standard technique” for children. This form of sedation dentistry allows to reduce the child’s anxiety and improves communication between the Pediatric Dentist and the child.
